Abstract
Dyeable fibre-forming block polymers consist of 99.75 to 75% by weight of propylene repeating units and the other repeating units consist of a random copolymer in which 99 to 50% by weight of the units are styrene or an aliphatic acrylate or methacrylate and the remaining units contain an organic radical having sulphonic acid, phosphonic acid or sulphonamide substituents. The above block copolymers may be blended with random copolymers of the type defined, and the block polymers, or the blends thereof with random copolymers, may be used in admixture with 1 to 25% by weight of a dyeable polyamide, polyester, polyurethane or polyurea. The block polymers are made by subjecting a mixture of polypropylene and random copolymer to high shear at a temperature of from 120 DEG to 240 DEG C. for from 1 to 20 minutes in the presence, if desired, of colloidal silica. The examples describe the preparation of block polymers by milling together polypropylene and copolymers of: (1) methyl acrylate and sodium allyl sulphonate, (2) methyl acrylate and sodium styrene sulphonate, (4) styrene and styrene sulphonic acid, (5) styrene and styrene sulphonamide, (7) methyl acrylate, styrene and styrene sulphonamide. The resulting polymers are melt-spun to form dyeable fibres.
