Abstract
983,402. Coating surfaces; coating-apparatus. T. WATANABE. June 8, 1961 [July 22, 1960], No. 20845/61. Heading B2B. A method of coating articles electrostatically comprises transporting the articles to be coated through an effective coating zone and holding such articles at a high voltage whilst in said zone and discharging particles or droplets of coating material at earth potential into said coating zone from an earthed atomizing head to cause such particles or droplets to move towards and deposit on said articles under the influence of the electrostatic field thereby produced between the atomizing head and the articles in the coating zone. Articles 22 to be coated are carried by hooks having a conductive portion 21 and an insulating portion 20 along a conveyer 17. The conductive part of the hook first comes into contact with an earthed rail 26, then an insulator 25, then whilst it is conveying the article past spray gun 16 it is in contact with live rail 23 connected to one pole of a high voltage supply. The hook then comes in contact with a further insulating section and finally with another earthed rail. The spray gun has a rotary head driven by a motor and is fed separately with coating material and compressed air ; the gun, and the other pole of the high voltage supply, are earthed.
