Abstract

983,281. Moulding presses. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 29, 1961 [Jan. 4, 1960), No. 203/60. Heading B5A. An apparatus for moulding thermosetting materials, e.g. rubber or phenol formaldehyde resins, comprises a mould 2, a transfer chamber 1, communicating with the mould through a feed hole 12, to accommodate a charge of material at an elevated temperature, a piston (not shown) to force the material under high pressure (i.e. above 1000 1b./sq. inch) into the mould, and one or more spew devices 3 which operate when the mould is full to allow escape of excess material and prevent the pressure in the mould rising, e.g. to above 500 Ib./sq. inch. The spew devices 3 comprise a piston 10 movable against the action of a spring 11 to uncover vents 8 and 9 for the escape of the excess material. The spew devices are provided at the parts of the mould which are the last to be filled. The chamber 1 has ports 6, 7 for the introduction of the charge of material and the material may be cured with the mould in the position shown or in an oven. The mould 2 is made in two parts mounted on platens 3, 4 and may be constructed of an epoxy resin or cast aluminium faced with an epoxy resin. The epoxy resin mould may be made by casting a resin core in a core-box, the core then being coated with a hard wax of thickness equal to that of the required article. The outer mould is cast over the sheeted core, and finally the wax sheet is removed to leave the moulding space.
