Abstract

The dichlorohydrin of ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether <FORM:0982953/C2/1> is made by heating to 90 DEG C. under reflux a mixture of ethylene glycol, boron trifluoride in ethereal solution, and epichlorohydrin. The dichlorohydrin <FORM:0982953/C2/2> is made by heating to 95-100 DEG C. under reflux a mixture of monochloroglycerol, boron trifluoride in ethereal solution, and epichlorohydrin.ALSO:Fibres obtained by extrusion of mixes comprising essentially a crystalline olefin polymer and a polymeric basic nitrogen containing compound are subjected to the action of a dichlorohydrin and a strong alkali such that the corresponding diepoxide is formed in situ. The dyeing properties of the fibres are thereby improved. Dichlorohydrin treatment and alkali treatment may be effected simultaneously or in successive steps. Specified dichlorohydrins are ethyleneglycol diglycidyl ether dichlorohydrin and diglycidyl ether dichlorohydrin. The alkali is preferably sodium hydroxide. Treatment of the fibres may be continuous or discontinuous before and/or after stretching. The dichlorohydrin may be used in aqueous or organic solvent solution or in the anhydrous state. The amount of alkali added is preferably the stoichiometric amount necessary for the conversion of the dichlorohydrin to diepoxide. In an example, a yarn obtained by melt spinning a mix of polypropylene and octadecylamine/epichlorohydrin/piperazine condensate is immersed in an aqueous solution of ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether dichlorohydrin containing caustic soda. The yarn is then heated at 120 DEG C., for 20 minutes and dyed in baths containing 2.5% dye laced on fibre weight, with a fibre/bath ratio 1 : 40. Dyeing with acid or metallized dyes is effected in presence of 3% ammonium acetate and 1% surfactant condensation product of ethylene oxide with an alkyl phenol. Acetic acid is subsequently added to the bath. Dyeing with plastosoluble dyes is carried out in presence of 2% surfactant.
