Abstract
Aromatic amines of the benzene series are manufactured by liquid phase hydrogenation of the nitro-compounds in presence of a metal catalyst which has been modified by contact with an organic base which (9) is miscible or soluble with the amine under the reaction conditions and (b) has a higher boiling-point and basicity than the amine. Alkanolamines are the preferred bases, but triethylene, diamine, nicotine and quinoline are also specified. In examples, aniline and o-toluidine are produced from nitrobenzene and o-nitrotoluene in presence of the respective products, triethanolamine and a Ni/kieselguhr catalyst. U.S.A. Specification 2,292,879 is referred to.
