Abstract

982,380. Coiling textile sliver. WARNER & SWASEY CO. April 19, 1963 [June 19, 1962], No. 15514/63. Heading D1F. Sliver is continuously delivered at constant speed into a container which is moved in a sidewise direction relative to a coiling head to form a first row of coiled sliver, whereupon the container is moved in a second direction perpendicular to the first and for a distance not exceeding the diameter of a coil of sliver and then in a third direction opposite to the first so as to form a second row of coiled sliver which may overlap the first row. In sliver handling mechanism 10, slivers S drawn through gill boxes 12,13, by front rollers 14,15, are deposited in coils or loops by coiler heads 16, 17, into containers T,T<SP>1</SP>,carried on a transfer table 20 which is traversed (in the direction of arrow 21 and in the reverse direction) and indexed forwards and backwards (in the direction of arrows 23 and 103) until the containers are filled with superposed layers of adjacent or overlapping rows of coils &c. of sliver. The traverse drive, Fig. 3, is derived from an endless chain 28 running continuously over sprockets 29, 291, and carrying a roller 36 engaging and sliding in a slot 38 in a member secured to table 20. At the extremities of the traverse motion, engagement of a cam face 61 of a cam 52 or 53 with one of a series of rollers 79 or 80 effects a single indexing forward movement of the table 20. As one layer of sliver approaches completion, engage. ment of a cam follower 98 with a fixed cam surface 100a slides a rod 96 from one positive position to another to cause an actuating portion 70 to engage convex cam portions 67 and pivot cams 52, 53, into a position whereat cam surfaces 62 thereafter engage rollers 79 or 80, to index backwardly the table 20. As the second layer of sliver approaches completion, engagement of a follower 99 with cam surface 101a pivots the cams 52, 53, into their starting position. The traverse and indexing movements of the table are guided by rollers engaging way surfaces on frame members.
