Abstract
9553. Mackie, J., Bradley, S., and Kirk, R. April 19. Coilers.-Slivers are delivered from stationary spouts i into cans a carried on a table b, which is given a slow reciprocating motion in one direction and a more rapid reciprocating motion in a direction at right-angles, so that the slivers are laid in the cans in a zigzag manner. The table is mounted by castors c on a flat surface, and is connected by pivoted slotted links q with a traversing right and left-handed screw o, the links being disposed between collars r on the screw. The screw is rotated from a sprocket m, and is traversed by reason of a butterfly nut, carried by stationary block p, engaging the threads. The table is also connected by a pivoted link w with a lever u on a stud t carrying a lever s, at the end of which is a roller which engages with the edge of a cam e on a shaft d driven by the gearing shown, at about one-sixth the speed of the screw o. The lever s is held in engagement with the edge of the cam by a counterweight v or the end of the lever may engage a grooved cam. Since the length of the zigzags is less towards the sides of the can than in the middle thereof and the motion must be quicker when feeding to the sides of the can, the projections on the cam are of varying sizes and are at varying distances apart. The screw may be made of a quicker pitch towards the ends so that the movement 'of the table would he more rapid at the ends, or the screw may be driven through oval gearing. The lever w is adjustable in the lever u, and has joints y to permit relative lateral movement of the table; the end of the link may have an eye sliding on a rod fixed to the table and parallel with the screw o. The table may work over an irregular surface so as to be jarred at intervals to cause the slivers to settle in the cans. According to the Provisional Specification, the disk on the shaft d may be formed with projections or tappets to engage with a suitably-formed member connected to the table while a spring or weight causes the return of the table between the engagement thereof by successive tappets which may be of variable pitch.
