A device for forming a gap in a stream of overlapping newspapers carried on a conveyer comprises a stop member pivotable about an axis transverse to the direction of motion of the conveyer to engage between two succeeding newspapers for an interval of time before being returned to its rest position above the conveyer and is characterized by the stop member being carried on a reciprocable carriage. In Fig. 1, newspapers are carried by a conveyer system which is interrupted by a step 10 formed by having conveyer belts 11, 12 passing around coaxial pulleys 13, 14 of different diameters. The stop member 16 is mounted on a carriage 17 which reciprocates in grooves 19 of side walls 20, (21) (Fig. 2, not shown) on wheels 18 between a forward position, shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and a rear position 17a under the action of pneumatic cylinder 26. The stop member 16 is pivotable to its engaging position 16a by means of a further pneumatic cylinder (29) (Figs. 3, 5, not shown) acting on a holder (27) fixed to the shaft (28) on which the stop member 16 pivots. The cylinders 26, (29) are controlled by a counting device (not shown) which senses the number of newspapers passing through the apparatus. In operation, the stop member 16 is lowered to position 16a and forms, with guide edges 31 on side walls 10, (21), a pocket for the stream of overlapping newspapers; the carriage 17 is then moved to position 17a, so that the stop member 16 is disengaged from the newspapers, and the stop member 16 is then raised prior to the carriage returning to its forward position.
