[Also in Divisions B3 and B5] In a toggle press, tie-rods 34, 36 carry at one end a crosshead 42, at the other end an outboard platen 38, and, slidably mounted between them, an inboard platen 44, and pairs of toggle arms 54, 56 are pivoted to the cross-head 42, pairs of toggle arms 48, 50 are pivoted to the inboard platen 44, and the four pairs of toggle arms are pivotally connected together at their inner ends in a centre block 60. The tie-rods 34, 36 are slidably mounted in bearing blocks 28, 30 carried by the machine frame. The block 60 is connected to a piston rod 72 of an hydraulic cylinder 70 which is carried by a yoke 68 supported by arms 64, 66 pivotally connected to the outer ends of the toggle arms, as shown in Fig. 2. On the supply of fluid to the cylinder 70, the block 60 is moved upwardly causing the toggle arms to straighten out and thereby cause the platens 38, 44 to approach each other. The axial position of the cross-head 42 on the tie-rods 34, 36 is adjustable, in order to vary the position of outboard platen 38 with respect to inboard platen 44, by simultaneous rotation of nuts 76, 78 threaded on to the tierods and bearing against the outer face of the cross-head. The nuts 76, 78 have sprocket teeth on their peripheries over which passes a chain 88, which also passes around a central idler sprocket 90 and a driving sprocket 92 having a crank-receiving projection 96. Locking bars 80, 82 are pivotally secured to the cross-head 42, and are adapted to lock the nuts 76, 78 on tightening of bolts 84, 86.
