Abstract

981,980. Stuffing-boxes; valves. CRANE Ltd. Sept. 20, 1963, No. 37188/63. Headings F2B and F2V. A stuffing-box packing arrangement comprises V-formed packing rings 23 supported between a backing ring 21 seated on the inner end of the box chamber 10 and a first split spring ring 15 engaging a groove in the chamber and further V-formed packing rings 28 supported by a backing ring 29 abutting a second split spring ring 18 engaging a groove adjacent the outer end of the chamber. A filler ring 24 is disposed between the spring ring 15 and the adjacent V-ring 23 and the space between the ring 24 and the V-rings 28 is filled with plastic packing 26 injected through a hole 25 by a fitting 27. The V-rings may be of rubber, leather or synthetic plastics material. The invention is shown applied to the stem 6 of a valve.
