Abstract

981,882. Liquid springs; pistons; packings. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. July 30, 1962 [Aug. 2, 1961], No. 28076/61. Headings F2S and F2T. A liquid spring comprises a housing 2 in which a piston 11 is slidably mounted, the piston including two relatively movable parts 14, 15 between which a sealing means 21 is mounted. The pressure set up in the sealing means is greater than the liquid in the housing. First and second anti-extrusion means 20, 22 are provided separate from the movable parts of the piston and positioned one immediately adjacent each side of the sealing means 21 to transmit pressure applied to the sealing means, as well as resisting extrusion thereof. In the construction shown a sleeve 10 is held within a vessel 2 by a split metal ring 9. A groove 6 in the sleeve 10 houses a sealing ring 7 of circular cross-section which engages in a V- shaped groove in a second sealing ring 8. The piston 11 comprises an end-portion 15 having an extesnion 18 which slides within a bore 14a of the piston head portion 14. A pin 16 passing through a bearing ring 19 and head portion 14 co-operates with an elongated slot 17 in extension 18. The spring is provided with a liquid filling cap 25. In a modification (the Figure of the Complete Specification not shown) the sleeve 10 is screwed into the vessel, the double ring sealing means between the sleeve and the vessel being housed in a groove in the vessel wall. The anti-extrusion rings 20, 22 are of nylon and the sealing ring 21 of rubberimpregnated fabric. A washer 23 of bronze is also provided.
