Operating mechanism for a vertically slidable door 13 in an elevator hatchway comprises a member on the elevator car 20 movable vertically relative to the car, an abutment-engaging member such as a vane 50 pivotally mounted at 51 on the vertically movable member, a projection 56 on the vane adapted to engage a fixed guide 55 on the car to swing the vane between a projected position and a retracted position as the vertically movable member moves up and down, and a vertically elongated abutment 40 fixed to the hatchway door and including a pair of plates 41, 43 one of which is biased towards the other by resilient means 45, the lower part 52 of the vane, when in its projected position, normally engaging the lower edges of the plates to raise or lower the hatchway door in response to movements of the vertically movable member, but being able to pass between the plates without being held thereby if impelled with sufficient force. Preferably the vertically movable member is one of a pair of vertically slidable counterbalancing doors 24, 25 operated by a reversible electric motor 35, the hatchway door 13 being one of a similar pair of doors slidable in guides 15. When the car 20 arrives at the landing 11 an arm 22 (not shown) carried by the car releases the locking means of the hatchway doors 13, 14. The motor 35 is started, and as soon as the car doors 24, 25 begin to open the vane 50 is projected by the guide 55 and locked in the projected position by a locking lever 57 pivoted to the door 24 at 58 and provided with a notch 59 adapted to engage the pin 56. Further movement of the car doors brings the part 52 of the vane into engagement with the plates 41, 43 so that thereafter both sets of doors move together. Facings of friction material 42, 44 are provided on the plates 41, 43, and the force applied by the leaf spring 45 can be adjusted by a screw 46. A friction brake is provided to arrest the doors 24, 25 at the limits of their travel.
