Abstract

<PICT:0981422/C1/1> Titanium dioxide containing the oxide of another metal or metalloid is prepared by oxidizing a titanium halide with a stream of oxygen gas containing a vaporized entrained metal or metalloid halide, the oxygen gas mixture being obtained by introducing a vaporizable metal or metalloid halide on to or into a bed of inert particulate material fluidized by the oxygen gas and the bed being maintained at a temperature such that the metal or metalloid halide is vaporized. The metal or metalloid halide may be a halide, e.g. chloride, of aluminium, zirconium, silicon, tin and/or boron. Specified bed materials are silica, alumina, titania, zirconia, rutile, bauxite, hematite, magnetite and zircon. The temperature of the bed may be maintained by preheating the stream of oxygen and/or by applying external and/or internal coils through which heated fluid is circulated. As shown in Fig. 1, a solid, vaporizable metal or metalloid halide contained in hopper 21 and shoot 20 is periodically delivered by screw conveyer 19 through duct 13 into vessel 12. The halide is delivered to evaporator vessel 1 by means of a worm conveyer 17. Vessel 1, charged with inert bed material to be fluidized, is provided with a steam jacket 4, an internal coil 5, and an inlet duct 8 and a discharge duct 10 for the entraining oxygen gas. The halide vaporizes on contact with the heated bed and the vapour is entrained in the oxygen entering duct 8 and passing through the fluidized bed. The oxygen, containing entrained metal halide vapour, is used to oxidize a titanium halide.
