Abstract

981,365. Upsetting tube ends. WELLINGTON ENGINEERING WORKS Ltd. Jan. 15, 1964 [March 8, 1963], No. 9233/63. Headings B3A and B3H. A spigot is formed on the end of a tube 4 by reducing the external diameter of an end portion 5, Fig. 1, by swaging or the like, to provide a curved shoulder 6, placing over the tube a sleeve 7, Fig. 2, and upsetting the shoulder with a tubular tool 8 to give a generally planar surface 10. During hot upsetting the tube abuts a stop 9 and pressure is applied to the tool 8 by an hydraulic ram or the tool may be hammered. Cooling air may be directed into the tube from a nozzle and limit switches can be used for controlling the various tool movements. The invention is used in particular for forming scaffolding tubes and both ends may be formed with spigots separately or simultaneously.
