Abstract

Textile materials, the fibres of which contain hydroxyl or carboxylic acid amide groups, are dyed or printed with an aqueous preparation containing a water-soluble reactive dye, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of a carboxylic acid having at least 2 carbon atoms that yields a carbonate when heated above 80 DEG C. and a free carboxylic acid in an amount such that the preparation has a pH below 6, and fixing the dyeing by heating above 100 DEG C. The specified salts are of the following types wherein Me represents an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal equivalent:- (a) <FORM:0981195/D1-D2/1> , (b) R-C­C-COO-Me wherein R is H or a hydrocarbon, especially non-alkyl, radical, (c) <FORM:0981195/D1-D2/2> where x is 0, 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 and R1 and R2 are H or a hydrocarbon radical and at least one of the two radicals must be H when x is greater than 1, (d) <FORM:0981195/D1-D2/3> wherein x is 0-6 and R is as above, (e) Me-OOC-C­C-COOMe, (f) R-CHOH-[CH2]x-COO-Me and R-CO-[CH2]x-COO-Me wherein x is 0, 1 or 2 as R is as above, especially a low alkyl, (g) MeOOC-[CH2]x-CO-[CH2]y-COO-Me wherein x and y are 1-4, and (h) <FORM:0981195/D1-D2/4> wherein R1 and R2 are hydrocarbon radicals, especially low aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic radicals. The free carboxylic and is preferably a mono- or dibasic acid of 1-6 carbon atoms. Numerous types of suitable reactive dyestuff are specified. Specified fibres to be dyed are natural and regenerated cellulose, wool, silk and polyamide fibres. Examples of padding and printing cellulose fibre fabrics are given.
