Abstract

A re-ignitable match composition comprises an oxygen source, a combustion rate modifying agent, an oxygen release catalyst and a binder, the composition being dispersed in a non-porous, synthetic polymer match body. The following materials are given as examples:- .Oxygen source:.Potassium nitrate ..Potassium chlorate ..Lead nitrate .Combustion rate. .controller:.Metaldehyde ..Trioxane ..Hexamethylene ..tetramine .O2 Release catalyst:.Manganese dioxide .Binder:.Cellulose nitrate ..Cellulose acetate .Polymer:.Monomethyl ..methacrylate ..Styrene ..Polysulphides ..Acrylonitrile ..Methyl acrylate The match is prepared by dispersing the composition particles in a solution of the binder in a liquid monomer which is capable of in situ polymerization without the use of solvents, this prevents the escape of the combustion modifier, which otherwise occurs through interstiticial channels. The partially solidified mass may be extruded to form rod which is then wrapped in polyethylene to prevent monomer evaporation during curing. After curing, the wrapping is removed, the rod cut to length, and then the matches are coated with a flame retardant.
