Repeatedly ignitable and extinguishable match and method of making it Various efforts and attempts have been made up to now to make a match that can be repeatedly ignited and extinguished and has a relatively long life.
The previous attempts have so far led to practically no satisfactory, usable results, which must be attributed to the fact that in the case of the matchstick compound used, there is no substance that regulates the combustion of the mass and is secured against unintentional escape.
The necessity of incorporating such a substance, which has a slow combustion rate, in a repeatedly ignitable match has probably long been recognized, since such a match has the consequence that such a match is easily ignited and easily again by blowing or can be made to extinguish by swiveling in the air in order to convert it into a state of reflammability.
With a steady loss of such substances through escape, the lifespan of the match is not only significantly reduced, but also the difficulty of igniting and extinguishing during the lifespan increases, with uneven burning must be noted at the same time.
The retention or preservation of such substances that change or regulate the combustion must therefore be described as a criterion for the effectiveness and usability of a repeatedly ignitable and extinguishable match,
because it has a long service life.
The invention now relates to a repeatedly ignitable and extinguishable match and a method for its production, in which the after parts of the known matches are avoided.
The match according to the invention is characterized in that it has an oxidizing agent, a combustible component, a component that regulates combustion, a polymer and a binding agent. The match made according to the inventive method is characterized by
that at least one body is produced from an oxidizing agent, a combustible component, a component which regulates the combustion, a liquid monomeric component and a binder.
Three exemplary embodiments of the subject matter of the invention are shown in the drawing. 1 shows a plan view of the first embodiment of the match, FIG. 2 shows a section along line 2-2 in FIG. 1, FIG. 3 shows an elevation of the second embodiment, FIG. 4 shows a section along line 4-4 in Fig. 3, Fig. 5 the third embodiment in elevation,
6 of which a section along the line 6-6 in FIG. 5 is shown on a larger scale, while FIG. 7 shows a section through the starting material intended for making the match according to FIG. 5 before it is rolled up.
The production of the match according to the invention presupposes the creation of a combustible mixture in the form of a suitable hard mass. In addition to certain known substances used to make matches, such as an oxidizing agent and a binding agent, this mixture also has a normally liquid monomeric substance,
which is effective as a dispersant for the various constituents and causes the polymerization for the intimate incorporation of the materials used in the non-porous mass, an escape of the proportion of the substance regulating the combustion is essentially prevented. The usability and the preparation of the solutions which have to evaporate during the preparation of the matchstick do not constitute the subject matter of the present invention.
In general, the repeatedly flammable match of the present invention has, in an intimate mixture, an oxidizing agent which is known as such, for example potassium chlorate or other chlorates or perchlorates or also nitrates, such as potassium nitrate, lead nitrate, etc., or behromates, etc.
The mixture also contains, as a relatively strongest component, a substance which regulates the combustion and leaves no residue on combustion. Such combustion-regulating substances preferably contain polymers of aldehydes, such as metaldehyde and trioxane, or derivatives of ammonia, such as hexamethylene tetramine and the like.
It. It was found that such compounds have a cooling effect, so that although the relatively high content of the oxidizing substance is due to the burning match, it can be extinguished by blowing it out or by moving quickly through the air.
These combustion-regulating materials also enable the match to be ignited safely by rubbing against a suitable friction surface.
The mass intended for making the match also contains the materials that cause the combustion, such as manganese dioxide and other substances which are already known materials. Be said constituents is also a binder made of a suitable designated combustible material, for. B. Cellulose nitrate, give beige. Cellulose acetate can also be used as a binder.
It should only be noted that the binder used does not need to be dissolved in a solvent, as is the case with the production of the known matches.
As an additional component, the compound can contain relatively small amounts of pentaerythritol and ferrous sulfate, which substances result in even combustion.
A liquid monomeric substance is provided as a dispersant for the components for making the match, which polymerizes in situ by catalytic action, so that a solid, dense resin forms, which represents a homogeneous mass in which the are evenly distributed. Each substance mentioned is embedded in the solid polymer obtained and secured against unintentional escape.
The available monomers are suitable for achieving the intended purposes monomethyl methacrylate, styrene, polysulfides, acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate and the like. The polymers formed burn completely, so that the resin has no influence on the desired flammable properties of the Match.
As already mentioned, no solvents are used in the production of the match according to the invention, with the result that the hardened mass is free of voids or other defective areas, as has been the case with the use of solvents up to now during production of matches could not be avoided using known methods.
Rather, the match according to the invention does not have any points allowing the substance regulating combustion to escape. Rather, this substance is firmly embedded in the mass without any possibility of escape.
The embodiment of the match according to FIGS. 1 and 2 has a homogeneous, hard body A, whose mass has a relatively high density and is formed from evenly distributed substances already mentioned above.
The body A is surrounded by a film-like coating B, which can be made, for example, of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate or some other suitable material and which prevents the match from burning faster and faster on the outer surface than on the face of the body pers A.
Films or coating materials can also be formed from polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, etc. for this purpose.
The body A of the match can, for example, have the following composition:

<tb> Ferrous sulfate <SEP> <U> 1.00 </U> <SEP> approx. <SEP> 3.132 The production of the match using the substances specified in the above example is preferably carried out as follows:
The cellulose nitrate is dissolved in the liquid monomer or in the monomethyl methacrylate and then the benzoyl peroxide is added, which serves as a catalyst to promote the polymerization of the monomer.
As soon as the cellulose nitrate has passed into solution, the remaining components are in a solid but fine-grained state, i.e. H. Potassium chlorate, metaldehyde, manganese dioxide, pentaerythritol and ferrous sulfate are mixed with the solution, whereupon the mixture changes to the plastic state and takes on a correspondingly larger volume. The plastic mass is then z.
B. pressed by means of an extruder through a suitable nozzle so that it takes the shape of a rod. The rod obtained is then covered with an un permeable film, e.g. B. made of polyethylene, wrapped, which prevents escape of the monomer during hardening, which is carried out according to a known method. The polymerization can be accelerated by known means using thermal or photochemical energy sources.
After hardening, the impermeable film forming the covering is removed and the rod is divided by cutting into sections of the desired length for the purpose of forming matches, after which the individual matches are provided with the covering B.
As a result of the property as a homogeneous body and its stability in relation to the maximum preservation of its effectiveness, which was achieved through the use of the monomer, the match remains its unchanged effectiveness for a relatively long period of time without restriction.
The match can easily be ignited and extinguished again, not only when it is used for the first time, but also each time after the latter during the entire service life, whereby it always burns with a constant flame. When not in use, there is no weakening of the effectiveness due to an unintended escape of the substance regulating the combustion fraction, accompanied by fragrant,
a risk to health and one from relatively violent explosive, gaseous substances. Matches produced according to the method described have been checked for their quality and properties by experts in every direction. As a result of the effective retention of the substance forming the combustible component, even the smallest remnants of a match can be ignited and burned and extinguished again in the same way as is the case with a complete match.
Another embodiment of the match C is shown in FIGS. This match is formed from a central body 1 which is enclosed by a combustible body 2, the latter lying within an organ 3 in the shape of a leaf.
The mixture from which the core 1 is formed corresponds in its nature to the mixture from which the body A of the embodiment according to FIGS. 1 and 2 is, i.e. H. from an intimate mixture of an oxidizing agent, e.g. B. potassium chlorate or other chlorates and perchlorates, nitrates, bichromates, etc., a substance regulating the proportion of combustion, including polymers of aldehydes, e.g.
B. metaldehyde and tri-oxane, also derivatives of ammonia, such as hexamethylene tetramine and the like., The combustion be acting agent such.
B. manganese dioxide, and a binder such as cellulose nitrate or cellulose acetate. These substances are known per se. It should be noted, however, that it is of particular importance that the binder does not have to be dissolved in a solvent, as is necessary in the manufacture of the previously known matches.
The combustible mixture contains a liquid monomeric agent as a dispersant, which polymerizes by catalytic reaction for the purpose of forming a solid, homogeneous, non-porous mass.
Substances can also be added to the body that forms the core, which result in even combustion. Such substances are e.g. B. pentaerythritol and ferrous sulfate can be used.
Flammable mixtures for the production of repeatedly flammable matches have the following general formula:

<tb> Ferrous sulfate <SEP> <U> 1.00 </U> <SEP> approx. <SEP> 2.144 When using the aforementioned substances, taking into account the approximate weight percentages given, they are intimately mixed with one another as follows:
The cellulose nitrate is in the liquid monomer, i.e. b. in mono-methyl methacrylate, brought into solution and then added the benzoyl peroxide, which serves as a catalyst to promote the polymerization of the monomer.
With the dissolved cellulose nitrate, the remaining solid, finely divided substances, d. H. the potassium chlorate, the metaldehyde, the manganese dioxide, the pentaerythritol and the ferrous sulfate are mixed together, which solution then changes to the state of a plastic mass.
The core 1 can now be enveloped with a combustible body 2, which in turn can be free of oxidizing agents and therefore less enriched than the core. This enveloping body serves less for easy flammability than to achieve constant, uniform combustion properties.
The combustible body 2 is essentially made from a component that regulates the combustion fraction, such as metaldehyde, which is secured against unintentional escape by a liquid monomeric agent analogous to that in the core.
Matches with a combustible enveloping body around a central core have hitherto been made from a substance which has a low combustion rate with the result that such substances could escape continuously, making the body unsuitable for the intended purpose.
The combustible body 2 can be produced, for example, according to the following general formula:

<tb> Combustion <SEP> regulating <SEP> component <SEP> approx. <SEP> 10

<tb> Monomer <SEP> catalyst <SEP> and <SEP> the <SEP> component <SEP> causing <SEP> self-combustion <SEP> approx. <SEP> 2.09 For example, taking into account the general information given above Formula use the following materials:

<tb> Boric acid <SEP> - <SEP> 1.00
<tb> Trioxane <SEP> <U> 1.00 </U>. <SEP> approx. <SEP> 2; 09 When using the materials given in the above formula, the intimate mixing takes place as follows: The cellulose nitrate is in the liquid monomer; d. H.
in the monomethyl acrylate, brought into solution and then the latter mixes the benzoyl peroxide, which serves as a catalyst for the polymerization of the monomer. The mixture containing the cellulose nitrate is given the boric acid and the trioxane beige and mixed with the solution, which changes to the plastic rule.
The plastic core 1 and the combustible body 2 are further treated in an extruder so that the combustible body surrounds the central core. The core enclosed with the combustible body is brought to harden using known means. During this process, the monomer present in both parts polymerizes. Substance and - changes into a resin of high density and great hardness.
The polymerization can be accelerated by the use of non-catalytically active agents, including the use of thermal or photochemical energy sources. While the hardening process is being carried out, it is necessary to prevent the monomer from escaping.
For this purpose, various means can be used with success, for example by attaching an impermeable cover, for example one made of polyethylene, in the form of a film around the combustible body, which film prevents the monomeric substance from escaping:
The hardening process can also be carried out in an autoclave under air pressure or under the pressure of an inert gas, where the pressure is selected so high that the escape of the monomeric substance is excluded.
After hardening, the film, if one has been used, is removed and the rod obtained is covered with a definitive covering 3 made of a thin film, e.g.
B. made of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate or another suitable film-like material that prevents faster burning of the flame on the outer surface than in the center, provided. Films or coating materials for this purpose are known, e.g. B. those made of polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, etc.
The rod provided with the definitive cover is then passed through. Cut into sections- the desired length- divided for the purpose of forming: matches that are at one end. be tapered conically for the purpose of exposing the core, as shown in FIG.
The core designated 1 in FIG. 3 contains the oxidizing agent, while the combustible body 2 is free of such components. The core 1 can therefore be easily ignited and. with respect to the combustible body 2 also easily extinguish again. The body 2, for its part, essentially has the component which regulates the combustion, which results in an even, slow burning of the ignited match.
The boric acid and trioxane in the combustible body have the flame-regulating properties and also the desirable plasticity.
Both the core and the combustible body are homogeneous and are suitable for maximum uptake and storage of the polymerized monomer, while the match has constant effective properties over a relatively long service life.
FIGS. 5, 6 and 7 illustrate a third embodiment of the repetitive flammable match containing a combustible mixture 4 which has been applied to a film or a sheet-shaped member 5. The member 5 is then rolled up into a body with the desired diameter.
In its preferred, approximately circular cross-section, this body has continuous layers of sheet material 5 and said combustible coating layer 4, which layers have a spiral shape and extend outward from the center of the body with a steadily increasing radius of curvature.
The combustible mixture forming the coating layer 4 is made from the same components and by the same process as the combustible core 1 of the embodiment according to FIGS. 3 and 4. In the manufacture of the same, the plastic mass with the admixtures is not in an extruder with processed the body 2, but sprayed onto a film 5 as a thin layer or applied according to another known method.
An ethylene polymer or other polyolefins, such as polypropylene, polybutylene or combinations of these, or films made of polystyrene or a polyvinyl alcohol can be used as the film material. Such films preferably have a thickness of about 0.025 mm and are flammable,
have a relatively large molecular weight and a wax-like shape. The layer of combustible material applied to the film has a thickness of preferably 0.25 mm. The film is denoted by 5 in FIGS. 6 and 7, while the layer formed from combustible material is denoted by 4.
After the mixture 4 has been applied to the film 5, the latter is immediately rolled up so that a tightly wound, elongated body with a circular cross-section is formed in which the film and the combustible mixture form successive layers along adjacent spirals. The rolled up body is subjected to a hardening process using known means, during which:
the monomeric material is converted into a resin of high density and great hardness by polymerisation and the body remains rolled up. The polymerization can be accelerated using non-catalytically active agents with the inclusion of thermal or photochemical energy sources.
After the hardening process is complete, the body can be broken up into sections of a certain length to form matches.
Such a match, denoted by D, represents a physically harder, repeatedly flammable body than matches of the previously known type. This one-matchstick-like. The body also has certain other extreme critical properties, such as the ability to use relatively reduced amounts of the combustion-regulating substance without reducing its flammability, extinguishability and burning properties,
which enables a relative increase in the concentration of the components causing the inflammation for the purpose of increasing the sensitivity of the body. In addition, the build-up material used for the film helps regulate combustion because it is itself combustible and burns without leaving any significant residue. The matches described can be produced economically, they are durable for an extended service life and have the property of constancy of operation.
