Abstract
980,632. Lighting fittings for tubular discharge lamps. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 28, 1961 [April 1, 1960], No. 71642/60. Heading F4R. Apparatus for supporting and controlling the flow of operating current through a tubular electric discharge fluorescent lamp, comprises a support member 3 carrying a socket 8 for an incandescent filament lamp 2 capable of serving as a ballast resistor for the discharge lamp 1, clip means 6 for releasably securing the discharge lamp to the support member, lamp sockets 14 for engaging contacts 13 at the ends of the discharge lamp enclosed within end caps 15, one of which includes a socket for holding a starter switch 16, a conductor 17 extending between the support member and each end cap and a further conductor extending between the end caps, the conductors being provided with spring means 18 so that with the end caps in operating position, the conductors are tensioned to lie closely against the external surface of the discharge lamp, the further conductor acting as a starting strip to assist in starting the discharge lamp. The support 3 is suspended from the wall or ceiling by an open framework of rods 4 terminating in a plate which may be secured to a lampholder 10 mounted on the ceiling and into which a bayonet plug 12 having leads 11 passing down one of the rods of the framework 4 to the lamp sockets 8, 14, is mounted. Ornamental shields of transparent, translucent or apertured opaque material may be provided on the framework 4 which may also carry a heat baffle 21.
