Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of general formula <FORM:0980593/C2/1> wherein R is alkyl (1-7 C) and R1 is 1-hydroxyalkyl (1-8 C) and the broken lines radiating from the rings denote bonds to optional substituents and that within the ring denotes that the bond in the 1,2-position may be a single or double bond; and their salts: and their preparation by treating a compound of formula <FORM:0980593/C2/2> wherein R10 is alkyl (1-7 C), with ammonia or an alkyl-amine (1-7 C) to give a 3,4-dihydroquinazolone I which is optionally reduced to a 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-compound; which first reaction may proceed via an intermediate of formula <FORM:0980593/C2/3> (in an example N-(2-hydroxy-propionyl)-anthranilic acid N-methyl amide is isolated and heated to yield the product I) or when the reaction is performed in the presence of an alkanol R2OH (1-7 C) via an initial alcoholysis product of formula <FORM:0980593/C2/4> (for example 4-chloro-N-(2-hydroxy-propionyl)-5-sulphamyl-anthranilic acid methyl ester, then reacted with ammonia or methylamine). Pharmaceutical preparations comprise compounds I or salts thereof with compatible pharmaceutical carriers. Tablets, capsules, solutions, suspensions and suppositories are mentioned for oral, parenteral and rectal administration. The compounds are useful as diuretics, bronchodilators and hypotensives.
