Abstract
979,983. Carding engines. CARDING SPECIALISTS (CANADA) Ltd. June 27,1963 [July 3, 1962], No. 25425/62. Heading D1N. Breaks in the continuity of carded webs arising from stoppage of the doffer whilst the main cylinder is running are avoided by causing the doffer to restart in a manner to re-present to the main cylinder that part of its surface displaying a fibre gap. In the form of apparatus shown in Fig. 1, doffers 16, 16a are driven by reversible electric motors and pressure rollers 4, 5 and stripper and transfer rollers 17, 18, 19, 20 are driven from the doffer 16. Rollers 6, 7, 17a, 18a are similarly driven from doffer 16a. The feed members 11,12 are driven independently of the doffer 16 and, after a stoppage, they are started first to allow the cylinder 14 to be filled with fibres, then the doffer 16 is reversed for a few inches, followed by forward movement. Prior to stopping doffer 16a, the calender rollers 9 are stopped by means of a clutch or differential arrangement to provide an excess of web between pressure rollers 6, 7 and the calender rollers. An alternative arrangement employs a guide roller that normally deflects the web from a straight path but is moved away from its normal position when the doffer and rollers are to be reversed. Instead of reversing the doffers and other rollers, the stripper rollers 17, 17a may be moved away from the doffers until the fibre gap has passed them. This displacement of rollers may take place under the control of mechanical or electrical means. According to the Provisional Specification, the doffer may be driven through some form of epicyclic gearing and by providing a clutch to lock the planet gears a forward or reverse rotation of the doffer may be obtained. In another arrangement employing tandem cards and pressure rollers, automatic means may be provided for moistening the top pressure roller just before a fibre gap reaches it.
