Abstract

979,431. Centrifugal pumps. L. BOLKOW, [trading as BOLKOW-ENTWICKLUNGEN KOMM. GES.]. March 23, 1961 [March 23, 1960(2)], No. 10693/61. Heading F1C. A method of reducing frictional losses in a centrifugal pump for pumping liquified gases or liquids consists in introducing into gaps between one or both of the rotor faces and the housing a medium of lower density then the pumped medium so that the latter is forced out of the gaps. Alow density medium, such as hydrogen or helium, is introduced under pressure into the gaps 7, 8 between the rotor 1 and casing 3, exterior blades 5, 6 on the rotor serving to reduce gap-losses. The pressure of the low density medium may be controlled on either side of the rotor to compensate for axial thrust when running. When the auxiliary medium is at high pressure a liquid ring seal 9, of known type, may be provided on either or both sides of the rotor. For low pressure a static seal 10 suffices.
