Abstract

An electrolytic recording medium comprises a sheet of paper impregnated with an electrolytically conducting, e.g. aqueous, solution containing a compound of a metal, capable of being oxidized in the presence of electrolytically produced alkalinity, and a polyhydroxyphenolic compound or an aromatic polyamine which, on passage of an electric current between electrodes contacting the paper, reacts with the oxidized metal compound produced to form a distinctive colour. Suitable metal compounds are: manganous, cobaltous or nickelous chloride, chromic or silver nitrate, stannous sulphate, plumbous nitrate, thallous nitrate or sulphate, vanadium tribromide or trichloride. The pH of the solution may range between 2.5 and 8.5. Suitable polyhydroxyphenolic compounds are: gallic acid, catechol, gentisic acid, hydroquinone and pyrogallol. Suitable aromatic polyamines are: o- and p-phenylene diamine, benzidene and their salts, diphenylamine hydrochloride and tolidine hydrochloride. A stabilizer, such as hydrazine, hydroxylamine or a salt thereof, thiourea, an alkyl thiorea and dithiobiuret, may be included in the solution, which may also contain sodium chloride, sodium or potassium nitrate and sodium hydroxide. The electrodes need not be consumed during recording. A preferred solution contains the following substances in parts by weight: manganous chloride 1.3, gallic acid 1.0 and sodium chloride 5.0.
