Abstract

978,829. Piston packing; seals. MINNESOTA RUBBER CO. July 30, 1963, No. 30230/63. Headings F2B and F2T. A rubber &c. sealing ring has a generally rectangular cross-section with convex lobes 21, 22 and 23 at three of its corners and an annular sealing lip 17 at its fourth corner. In use, the ring is housed in an annular groove in one of the members to be sealed and the edge 19 of the lip 17 bears resiliently against the other member. Fig. 5 shows a piston and cylinder assembly in which both the piston 26 and the piston rod 31 are packed by sealing rings, according to the invention, housed in grooves 28 and 30 in the piston and cylinder respectively. Fig. 6 shows the application of the invention to a face type seal, the sealing ring being housed in a groove 38 in a body 36 and the lip contacting a radial face 35 of a second body 34.
