Abstract
978,687. Welding by pressure. H. A. SCHLATTER A.G. Aug. 8, 1961 [Aug. 25, 1960], No. 28607/61. Heading B3R. In flash butt welding bevelled or mitred workpieces, when one piece is fed forward to the other piece the pieces enclose an angle different from that finally required so that after upsetting and cooling the pieces enclose the required angle. The frame pieces 3, 4 are clamped on supports 5, Fig. 2, in jigs 1, 2, the jig 1 being mounted on a slide 6 movable by a hydraulic device 7 and the jig 2 being mounted on a fixed table 9 and the jigs comprising blocks la, 2a and clamping jaws 1b 2b movable by hydraulic devices. The jig 2 is pivotally adjustable about a pin 10 by two set-screws 13 clamping a tongue 14 fixed to the table 9 and screws 17 fix the jig in its adjusted position. The jig 2 is set, after trial and error, so that the angle enclosed initially by the clamped pieces differs from that required and so that after distortion caused by welding the welded parts enclose the required angle. An eccentric may replace screws 13 and tongue 14 and either jig may be swingable about an axis parallel to the plane of the table 9 to compensate for twisting. The tongue 14 or eccentric may be provided on the jig 2 instead of on the table.
