Abstract

[Also in Division B8] In an apparatus for freezing packaged products, comprising parallel refrigerated plates between which the packages are disposed in rows and between which they are advanced as a unit intermittently to expel an outer row of packages from between a given edge of the plates, means are provided for freeing the expelled row of packages from the next adjacent row still between the plates and to which they are joined by ice adhesion. In the form shown, horizontal rows of packages are advanced intermittently in a downward direction between vertical refrigerated plates 11A ... 11E. To allow for the advancement and insertion of the packages, the plates 11 can be moved laterally apart by means of hydraulic rams 12 and the movement of the individual plates is co-ordinated by a pantograph linkage 13 at each end of the plates 11. Mounted beneath each of the plates 11B and 11D are a pair of package-engaging bars 14. The individual bars are L-shaped in cross-section and are carried upon a plurality of levers 15 carried on pivot studs 16 which are threaded into the lower edges of the plates 11B, 11D. The bars 14 can be moved from a retracted position wherein they lie within the planes of the sides of the plates, upon which they are mounted, to an expanded position beyond the planes of the plates, this action shearing off any row of packages projecting beyond the bottom edges of the plates 11. The bars 14 are actuated by a lever 25 mounted at the upper end of a tubular shaft 26 and the shaft 26 is rotatably actuated through arms 54 and a slotted cross-head 53 by a fluid pressure cylinder 50. The lower ends of the shafts are journalled in suitable bearings mounted upon bushings slidably supported on a cross-member, the movement of these bushings being co-ordinated with the lateral movement of the plates 11 by an auxiliary pantograph linkage 42.
