THOMAS M. PHILLIPS, 0F YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE YOUNGSTOWN STEEL COMPANY, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
FORGING PRESS.
Application filed March 11, 1921. Serial No. 451,452.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TrIoMAs M. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Forging Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a forging press embodying my invention; and
Figures 2 and 8 are sectional views taken, respectively, on the lines 11-11 and III- III of Figure 1.
My invention has relation to forging presses, and more particularly to presses which are used for the purpose of removlng the cinder and forming a billet from puddle balls.
I The object of the invention is to provide a press of this character, having means which will permit the cinder to fallthrough and out of the way when squeezed out, so that at the next impact of the press rams no solid cinder can. be forced into the metal, thereby enabling the production of a more perfect billet with sharp corners.
A further object of the invention is to provide a press of this character in which the rams exert horizontal pressures with the anvils arranged to free themselves from frozen cinder through gravity, so that the press is always clean. Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 2 designates the frame of the press, which may be of any suitable character. 3 designates the main ram of the press carried by the plunger 4 working in the cyl'nder 5. 6 is the ending ram carried by the plunger 7 working in the cylinder 8. 9 designates the anvil at the opposite side of the press from the plunger 8. The floor of the press cavity consists of a grid or grille 10, having its openings arranged to allow the cinder to readily fall through as it is squeezed out, the cinder falling into a hopper 11, and then into the chute 12.
The anvil 9 is mounted in suitable guides 13, and is arranged to be vertically reciprocated when desired by means of the lever 14 having a lifting engagement at 15 with the anvil and fulcrumed at 16. This lever may be operated in any suitable manner, as by the connection 17 with the plunger 18 of the power cylinder 19. The anvil is shown as having fingers or projections 20 which extend into the adjacent openings of the grid or grille 10, so that when the anvil is reciprocated it assists in freeing the parts from any cinder which may have adhered thereto. By reason of the open grid or grille, and the fact that the pressures are exerted horizontally, the anvils will largely free themselves from frozen cinder by gravity.
It will be obvious that the grid or grille may be of various constructions, the object being to provide openings or perforations which are not opposite the thrust of the rams, for the purpose of permitting the cinder to readily drop through and out of the Way, and thus prevent its being forced into the metal upon a subsequent impact of the ram.
I claim:
1. In a forging press of the character described, a horizontally acting ram, a coop crating vertical anvil, and a perforated floor or bottom for the press cavity, substantially as described.
2. In a forging press of the character described, the combination with two horizontally acting rams working at substantially right angles to each other, of a grid or grille forming the support for the puddle ball while being acted upon by the rams, substantially as described.
3. A press of the character described, having a grid or grille forming the floor of the press, substantially as described.
4. In a forging press of the character described, the combination with a grid or grille forming the floor of the press, of a vertical anvil, and means for vertically reciprocating the anvil,'substantially as described.
5. I11 a forging press of the character described, the combination with a grid or grille forming the floor of the press, of a vertical anvil, and means for vertically reciprocating the anvil, said anvil having fingers or projections extending within adjacent openings of the grid or grille, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 111 hand.
y THOMAS M. PHILLIPS.
