Abstract
978,408. Printing-apparatus. ELECTROSTATIC PRINTING CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Nov. 14, 1963 [Dec. 17, 1962], No. 44989/63. Heading B6C. An electrostatic printing device comprises means for establishing an electric field between an electrode 10 and a conductive screen 12 having apertures 12A therein arranged in a pattern desired to be printed, a rotating brush 20 or other means for applying a mixture of two types of powder having opposite triboelectric polarity properties from a container 22 to the apertures 12A of the screen so that one of the powders passes through the apertures and on to a shell of paper 14 located between the electrodes 10, 12, and means 18 for reversing the polarity of the electrodes whereby the other powder passes through the apertures on to the paper 14. The powder particles may consist of a mixture of two differently coloured finely-ground resins and in the embodiment of Fig. 2 three stencils 30, 32, 34 are mounted on an endless belt 36 and are provided with conductive tabs 30A, 32A and 34A adapted to be engaged by a contact brush 72. The patterns in the screens may be complementary and may be printed in turn on a web 46 beneath the upper electrode 44 in different colours. The programme for the printing is automatically controlled by a circuit including a pulse generator 50, actuated on rotation of the belt rollers 38, 40, a counter 54, a relay 66 and a double-throw switch 68. Two rows of stencils may be arranged side-byside on the endless belt so as to pass beneath a pair of upper electrodes, Fig. 3 (not shown), and the web, if conductive, may itself form the upper electrode, Fig. 4 (not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 6, two stencil screens 124 and 126 are arranged one on each side of a web 122 and the screens are formed with conductive portions 124A, 124B and 126A, 126B, the respective screen portions being separated by an insulating portion. Curved stencils may be used according to the invention to print on bottles, fruit, and curved wooden and ceramic surfaces.
