712,865. Printing-surfaces; intaglio printing. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 17, 1952 [March 15, 1951], No. 6837/52. Class 100 (2) Apparatus for applying printed lines on to paper or other material 4 comprises an intaglio printing- roller 1 whose printing areas consist of a plurality of continuous open grooves 6 for the reception of the printing liquid 2, substantially all points of the groove being inclined to the roller axis at an angle of from 10-90 degrees, and a doctor blade 3 to remove excess printing liquid from the roller surface. The grooves may zigzag at an inclination of 14 degrees and 2 minutes as shown. The inclination of the grooves prevents the blade 3 from moving into them. The apparatus is particularly applicable for printing electrically conductive lines on to insulating material, for use as described in Specification 690,022, [Group XXXVI], and the continuity of the grooves ensures proper conductivity. The roller 1 rotates in a bath of printing liquid and in contact with an impression roller 5 round which the paper is passed. The grooves may be tapered downwardly, being 0.02 inch across at the top, 0.018 inch at the bottom, 0.008 inch deep, and 12 inches long in an axial direction, each lap of the zigzag being 2 inches long. The printing liquid may be a graphite phenolic resin varnish mixture, such as " Rescon," and when dried and baked, produces a surface resistivity of 1,000 ohms per square.
