Abstract

978,219. Grain cleaners. N. ANDERSSON. Jan. 24, 1962, No. 2586/62. Heading A2Q. In apparatus for cleaning grain falling through an upwardly moving, winnowing current of air within a cylindrical drum 1, the falling grain is spread to form a hollow cylindrical layer, within which is located a turbine wheel 10 having blades 14, so shaped and set that a portion of the upwardly moving air passes through and rotates the wheel and is deflected, by its blades, towards and through the cylindrical layer of falling grain. The drum 1 has an upper tangential outlet 2, connected to an exhauster or like suction device, and a lower opening 3 admitting air and serving as an outlet for cleaned grain, which falls, through a gap 20, into a receiver 4. Within the drum is a cylindrical part 18 spaced from the drum wall by a relatively narrow, annular passage 19 leading to the outlet 2. Grain is fed into the drum through a central tube 5 terminating in a discharge opening 6 located above a frusto-conical grainspreading plate 7 carried on a cylindrical tube 16 secured to the turbine wheel around its shaft 8, which is supported by a cross-piece 9. Alternatively, the plate 7 may be secured to the top of the shaft 8. The blades 14 are preferably surrounded by a frusto-conical ring 15 secured to the turbine wheel, as by arms 17 on the tube 16. The ring 15 is spaced from the plate 7 by a gap 21. The plate 7 prevents grain from falling into the turbine wheel and, together with the ring 15, gives the falling stream of grain the form of a hollow cylindrical layer. Chaff and dust are carried, in the current of air, through the passage 19 and the outlet 2.
