A contact device for producing electrical impulses of a constant duration comprises a cylinder head 10 which, in response to movement of a carriage 26 by a rod 30, connected, for example, to an accelerator pedal, follows a forward path from left to right compressing a spring 14 until a ramp 15 on the head 10 engages a ramp 32 of a fixed stop 31, at which position the heel 10a of head 10 disengages from portion 28 of the carriage 26 and the head moves back under spring 14 along carriage ramp 29, projecting pins 17 on head 10 being constrained to pass above portions 21 of a grid 18 by bevelled sections 23 thereon such that head 10 is moved from right to left along a return path different from the forward path independently of any further movement of carriage 26. During the return motion a spring arm 3 carrying a contact 3a is engaged by a ledge 16 on head 10 to close contacts 2a, 3a for as long as pins 17 move over portions 21 of grid 18, i.e. until head 10 drops back into its initial position as pins 17 descend through grid recesses 22. The return motion is governed by an air dashpot formed by a pivoted piston 5 engaging in a bore 9 in head 10 and by spring 14. Carriage 26 slides back on rails 25 to reset the device, but without raising head 10 sufficiently to re-close contacts 2a, 3a.
