Abstract
978,015. Tumbler driers. GENERAL STEEL WARES Ltd. Dec. 13, 1960, No. 42911/60. Heading F4G. A tumbler drier comprises a perforated drum 4, Fig. 6, within a housing 20 having an inlet 21 to which air, heated by direct contact with a gas burner 36, is supplied along a folded air path 32a.. . 32d formed by a generally triangular shaped housing 29 mounted on the housing 20 and an inner baffle 30. A steam of indirectly heated air is also supplied to the inlet 21 by passage between a thin heat transfer surface 33 mounted above the burner and the outer wall 31 of the housing 29, and a further indirectly heated air stream by-passes the folded air path by passage through a duct 35 formed by a housing 34 overlying the housing 29 and enters the drum 4 through the inlet 21 but at another side of an imperforate strip 24 which divides a perforated screen covering the inlet 21 from that in which the folded air streams enter the inlet. A fan 10, Fig. 2, draws the heated air through the inlet and drum and out of housing outlets through a lint filter for discharge at an exhaust 28. A flame pattern detector 54 comprising a temperature responsive device is mounted through openings in the housings 34, 29 immediately above the heat transfer surface 33 and downstream of the burner 36 to control by a solenoid-operated valve the gas flow to the burner upon abnormal temperature when the pattern of the flame 59 alters to the dotted position shown at 60. Gas is supplied to the burner through a manually controlled cock 43 and is delivered through solenoid controlled valves 44, gas line 46 to a pilot burner and through a main gas line 45 to the burner 36. The operation of the drier is also controlled by a timer to regulate the length of operation of the drier, an adjustable thermostat to select the temperature at which the drier is to operate and a temperature-responsive element 53 to shut-off the heat energy source via the valves 44 in response to abnormal temperatures in the drum. The drum is horizontally mounted on a shaft 3 within a casing 48 and rotated by a motor 8 through a reduction drive comprising belts 11, 16 and pulleys 12, 15, 17, the motor also driving the fan 10 through the belt 11.
