Abstract

1507995 Gas fired water heaters for domestic supply and central heating BRITISH GAS CORP 25 June 1976 [10 June 1975] 24820/75 Heading F4A A water heater comprises a heat exchanger 23 through which pass a pipe 3 for the instantaneous heating of domestic water and a branch of a central heating circuit, a gas fired burner 2 which receives gas via line 1 and at least one fluid controlled gas valve, a variable speed burner fan 13, a pump 10 for the central heating circuit, a fluid controlled valve 8 which can divert central heating water to by-pass space heaters 26, thermostats to measure the domestic and space heating water temperatures, and a flame sensing device. As shown there are two gas valves 12, 16 in series and they are controlled in response to central heating water pressure differentials measured across the pump 10 and heat exchanger 23 respectively. The valve 8 operates in response to domestic water pressure differential across the heat exchanger to by-pass space heaters 26 when domestic water is turned on. The heater is controlled by control box 11 and central heating demand is met only after domestic water demand has been satisfied. When a domestic tap is opened the water temperature, detected by thermostat 14, is reduced if necessary to below 60‹ C. by the operation of a mixer valve 4 . The flow of water operates the valve 8 and a switch associated with this valve turns on the burner ignition circuit and the pump 10. Water pressure across the pump opens gas valve 12 and the fan is turned on. When the fan has blown air through the burner for a predetermined short period a solenoid valve 15 closes allowing gas valve 16 to be opened by water pressure across the heat exchanger. The burner is ignited and the fan speed is adjusted to approach the preset water temperature of 60‹ C. and the fan is turned off and solenoid valve 15 opened when this temperature is reached. When no flame is sensed the fan is turned off, the solenoid valve 15 opens, and the pump is turned off and the heater must be reset manually. A high temperature detected at 22 effects a similar shut-down. Time clock X and room thermostat 25 initiate central heating demand and the demand causes the pump to be turned on. Thereafter the system functions as described above with the fan speed set to minimum and the fan turned off and solenoid valve 15 opened when a central heating water temperature of about 82‹ C. is reached. The valves are all operated by the application of differential water pressure to a diaphragm and in the embodiment shown valves 12, 16 are in the form of two diaphragm operated valve members in the same valve casing (Figs. 2, 3, not shown).
