In a flowmeter comprising a rectangular pipe section 1 passing through apertures in the ends 5, 6 of a rectangular yoke 3, 4 an alternating magnetic field is created within the pipe by poles N.S. and the currents in the liquid resulting from its movement induce a signal whose simplitude is proportional to the rate of flow in windings 21-24 through additional poles P situated between each pair of magnetising poles. The flow is indicated in a meter 35 and compensation for the effects of parasitic fields is provided by a circuit comprising a transformer 17 potentiometers 27, 19 and a capacitor 18 which are set to produce a zero output when there is no flow. The pipe which is non-magnetic has an electric conductivity lower than that of the liquid e.g. metal flowing through it, and the smaller sides may be lined with copper. The yokes are of luminations, and an additional coil may be provided to monitor liquid resistivity for compensation purposes.
