Abstract

977,883. Shaft couplings. C.A.V. Ltd. Nov. 14, 1963 [Nov. 19, 1962], No. 43595/62. Heading F2U. To take up backlash in a splined coupling between male and female members 1, 2, a wedge piece 6, in a recess 4, 5 formed in the splines, is centrifugally and/or spring-urged outwardly to engage and spread apart the side wall of the recess so that the splines 3 firmly engage on one, e.g. the driving side, only and backlash on overrun is prevented. A headed pin 8 fast in the male member 1 retains the wedge piece 6 thereon when the coupling is disengaged, and, the angle between the side walls of the recess 4, 5, engaged by the wedge 6 is 16 degrees to ensure sufficient frictional grip to prevent inward movement of the wedge piece under a reverse torque.
