Abstract

977,679. Ventilating mines. MAUD LILIAN ELFRIDA MARY, THE DOWAGER COUNTESS OF WHARNCLIFFE. Oct. 25, 1963 [Oct. 30, 1962], No. 41004/62. Heading F4V. Non-condensible gases and black damp are withdrawn from a mine gallery between the coal face 1 and gob 2 through two sets of troughs 7, one set placed with their open sides against the floor and the other with their open sides against the roof, and expelled via pipe lines through the pit shaft or drift. The troughs (Fig. 3) are of steel and include a grid 10 to prevent entry of coal dust and are joined together end-to-end to form a set, the end trough having a throat 11 for connection to a pipe 12. Fig. 1 shows two sets of troughs supported against the roof by projections on pit props 6 and connected through pipes 12, a filter 16, an impeller 14 and a line 15 to a main pipe line 17 in a main roadway 4. The main pipe 17 communicates with a drawoff line, Fig. 2 (not shown), leading through a pit shaft to a separating tank or condenser. A further impeller or impellers, each with a filter, are provided in the main pipe line 17. Beneath the set of troughs shown is a similar set on the floor, Fig. 4 (not shown), from which gases are withdrawn through a set of pipes, filters and impellers the same as those for the upper set. A conveyer 5 runs between the face 1 and the gob 2 and there is no electrical apparatus between the face and the gob. Specifications 839,973 and 901,640 are referred to.
