Abstract

977,653. Moulding tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. May 10, 1961 [May 19, 1960], No. 16943/61. Heading B5A. In the manufacture of pneumatic tyres, a tyre carcass 12 in cylindrical form and a tread band 13 are mounted separately in a diaphragm, vulcanizing press 1 having a pair of separable mould halves 2, 3 and an inflatable, flexible diaphragm 4, the press is closed and the diaphragm 4 simultaneously inflated to shape the carcass 12 and to press its outer surface 14 against the tread band, inner surface 15 and to mould the completed tyre which is then vulcanized by heating the mould. The tread band 13 may be supported in the lower mould 3 as shown or, alternatively, on prongs between the mould halves 2, 3 which are withdrawn just before the mould is completely closed.
