Abstract

906,538. Building pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Jan. 26, 1959 [Jan. 29, 1958], No. 2913/58. Class 144 (1). A pneumatic tyre is built by first forming a flat band carcase 17 on a building drum comprised of two axially-spaced, coaxial, mutually approachable end parts 1, 2 which serve to receive and shape the beads 9 and lower sidewall regions of the carcase into substantially their final shape, and then applying pressure to the inner surface of the crown region of the carcase whilst simultaneously approaching the end parts 1 and 2 towards each other so that the carcase is shaped into toric form to contact a tread 19 and breaker 18 centred around the carcase. As shown, the end parts 1, 2 form the shoulders of a high crown former and are connected by rotatable screws 4 which engage inner peripheral rings 3 of the parts 1, 2 with respectively opposite-hand screw engagement whereby rotation of the screws 4 effect simultaneous approach or receding movement of the parts 1, 2. The screws 4 are journalled in spiders 7 which are mounted on the drum shaft (not shown) and when the carcase band is completed the spiders 7 are removed in turn to permit the assembly of bead-clamping rings 11, 12 against the carcase beads 9. The rings 11, 12 have sealing engagement on the drum shaft and the ring 11 has an entry 16 for the supply of pressure air to shape the carcase. The required shaping may, however, be achieved centrifugally instead of by inflation. The tread 19, and breaker 18 if fitted, may be centred around the carcase in a segmented removable ring 20 which may be internally recessed to receive the tread either as shown in Fig. 3, or sufficiently to carry the tread in its shaped condition when on the finished tyre. In alternative embodiments, a removable rigid centre portion may be inserted between the end parts 1, 2 to support the carcase plies during building thereof, the centre portion being removed prior to the shaping operation, or a flexible rubber diaphragm may be stretched between, and clamped to, the end parts, the pressure air being introduced through the diaphragm to act directly on the carcase when shaping the tyre.
