977,273. Vehicle suspension; mounting gear-boxes; brake disposition. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. June 1, 1962 [July 3, 1961], No. 21170/62. Headings B7D and B7H. In an independent rear suspension for a motor vehicle, a differential gear easing is attached to cross-frame members 12 and 14 supported by rubber cushions 18 upon frame side rails 16, the wheel 32 being mounted on a stub shaft 33 carried by a wheel bearing housing 34 which carries the brake backing plate and is rigidly affixed to a suspension arm 36 mounted by a ball joint 38 at its inner end upon a bracket 40. An arm 46 is connected by a ball joint 44 to a bracket 42 extending downwardly from the wheel housing and is rigidly secured at its other end to a torsion bar 48 secured to the bracket 40 and pivotally supported by a bracket 47 connected to the frame. Driving half-shafts 26 are connected by universal joints 30 and 28 to the stub axles 33 and differential output shafts 24, respectively. In a modification, Fig. 2, the brake drum 50 is mounted inboard.
