Abstract

977,198. Road vehicle suspensions. MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE, CANADA. Dec. 31, 1962, No. 49181/62. Heading B7D. A road vehicle suspension comprises a torsion bar 10 journalled in a housing 15 attached to the vehicle, the other end of the bar being fired by an anchor plate 14 dowelled to a bracket 12 attached to the vehicle. The vehicle wheel 29 is mounted on a stub shaft 28 carried by a trailing arm 19 pivotally attached to a journal 22 contained in the housing 15, the arm 19 being coupled by a ball-and-socket connection 18 to a torsion arm 16 splined to the torsion bar 10. A casing 11 encloses the bar and in a modification, the housing 15, casing 11 and bracket 12 may be integral, the device being attached to the vehicle solely by the housing 15. End thrust on the journal 22 is taken by a ball race 24 and the end cap 26 of the housing contains an oil reservoir 27 for the ball-socket joint 18.
