[Also in Division E1] A mining machine 1 is moved along a mine floor or conveyer 3 by an endless traction element 4 entrained round pulleys 5, 6, at least one pulley 6 being power driven and movable away from pulley 5 by a power means 8, 9 to eliminate slackness in the element 4, the power means 8, 9 and the drive of pulley 6 being on a common power supply. As shown, a hydraulic pump 11 rotates pulley 6 and supplies fluid to cylinder 9 simultaneously, the piston 8 having a diameter sufficient to maintain chain 4 taut during rotation of pulley 6, while allowing the elastic extension of chain 4 to relax when the fluid supply is cut. Machine 1 incorporates a shear cutter 2.
