Abstract

977,107. Metal melting furnaces. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. March 19, 1963 [March 21 1962], No; 10788/63. Heading F4B. Plant for refining metals comprises a cupola furnace, at least two tiltable induction furnaces, and a pivotable or displaceable pouring channel for alternately filling each induction furnace with metal which has been melted in the cupola. In a first embodiment, Fig. 1, molten metal is discharged from a cupola 1 via a channel 3 having a discharge hole 4 into a collector space 5 of a pouring channel 7 which pivots about block 6. The metal then pours down the inclined channel 7, through a discharge hole 8 and through an aperture 20 in the furnace cover 19 of one of two low-frequency induction furnaces 9 or 10 depending upon the position of pouring channel 7. Each of the furnaces 9, 10 comprises a body 12 with a pouring spout 14 below which is a spindle 13, mounted in supports 21, about which the furnace can be tilted by hydraulic cylinders 16. When in its basic position, the body 12 rests on a support 15. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, and Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), the transfer of molten metal from the cupola alternately into one of the two induction furnaces is effected by a laterally displaceable, arcuate pouring channel 23 which moves on a supporting block 24 provided with a spindle 25 which slides in two guide segments 26, 27 fixed to channel 23 so that the latter has two end positions which afford paths for molten metal between the end of the cupola discharge channel 22 and furnaces 9, 10 respectively. In yet another embodiment, Fig. 5, and Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), means are provided for lifting and lowering the induction furnaces 9 and 10 as well as tilting them. Each induction furnace is pivotably mounted on a spindle 33 mounted in slide blocks 34 which are displaceable to a limited extent in vertical guides 35 situated in columns 36. At least one slide block 38 guides the side of the furnace body remote from the spout in vertical guides 37 which are open at the top or at such a height that slide blocks 38 are released when slide blocks 34 reach the top of guides 35. Telescopic hydraulic cylinders 40 are provided and include two pistons 41 and 42 (Fig. 6), the former serving to lift the furnace and the latter serving to subsequently tilt it. In a further modification, the cupola is encircled by a plurality of induction furnaces.
