977,075. Slaughtering animals. GEO. A. HORMEL & CO. April 17, 1963, No. 15181/63. Heading A1M. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for use in preparing animals for slaughter comprises a deck conveyer 15 which moves the animals to an anaesthetizing chamber 24 in which are endless slot conveyers 29 arranged to form a V- shape for supporting, confining and moving the animals through the chamber 24 which contains carbon dioxide. The anaesthetized animals are removed from the chamber 24 by an ascending endless deck conveyer 47 at the entry end of which is a rod 60 for turning each animal on its side so that all animals are conveyed to a slaughtering station in a pre-determined orientation. The animals are conveyed from the slaughtering station by a foraminous conveyer. In a modification the anaesthetizing chamber comprises a descending portion, a horizontal portion and an inclined portion so that the carbon dioxide is concentrated in the horizontal portion.
