Abstract
977,032. Temperature-responsive actuating elements; thermometers. J. GRAW. Oct. 6, 1961, [Oct. 6, 1960], No. 36069/61. Heading G1D. A bimetallic strip 2, Fig. 1, such as for use in a thermometer attached to a radio-sonde, has thin metal wires 9 attached thereto to increase the response to ambient temperature and reduce the response to radiation. The wires 9 may be attached to the interface 6 between the two layers 4, 5 of the bimetal strip. Alternatively the wires may be attached in the form of tufts to the outer face of the bimetal. There may be thermally insulating and radiation reflecting layers around the bimetal with the wires passing through both layers. In another form the bimetal is a wire which tapers from an end of elongated cross section to a circular sectioned end carrying the pointer 7 moving over a scale 8. Alternatively the wires may extend across recesses in the bimetal or form a grid 42, Fig. 8, either directly attached to one end of the bimetal or connected through a thermally conducting bridge piece 40. The bimetal may be surrounded by an insulating shield 28. When used in a radio-sonde the pointer may move over a morse-cylinder feeding a transmitter. The wires may be in the form of five cores fixed to the bimetal, or may be produced by electrolytic etching of the bimetal.
