Abstract

1,222,504. Thermocouples. TRANSYSTEMS Ltd. 27 Feb., 1968 [3 March, 1967], No. 10317/67. Heading HlK. A foil thermocouple which is elongated and not straight is made by depositing one metal on a foil of another metal. In a preferred embodiment copper or iron is electroplated or vapour deposited on a constantan foil. Deposition may be restricted to certain areas by masking, and the resulting thermocouple shaped by photoresist etching techniques. Alternatively the foil is shaped prior to deposition over its entire area. The couple together with a strain gauge may be stuck to an adhesive polyester tape which is attached to a surface the temperature of which is to be measured or stuck directly on the surface. Other thermocouple materials suggested are nickel-chrome deposited on nickel-aluminium foil, and platinum or platinum rhodium. Preferably the couple is U- or zig-zag-shaped.
