Abstract

1,083,750. Measuring temperature electrically. ROSEMOUNT ENGINEERING CO. Oct. 1, 1965, No.41814/65. Heading G1N. To avoid changes in resistance due to stresses induced by differential thermal expansion, a temperature sensor comprises a helical resistance element 28 (Fig. 6) wound during construction on a conical mandrel, and coated with a thick layer of ceramic insulating material 30 (e.g. aluminium oxide), having the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the element, which may be platinum wire. The ceramic surface is machined to make the unit fit closely inside a metal casing 25 (e.g. platinum). The mandrel is removed after assembly, and in other embodiments, Figs. 1, 3 (not shown) it is cylindrical. Alternatively the wire element may have only a thin coating of insulation and a thick coating of metal is placed thereover which is machined to fit inside an outer casing, Fig. 1 (not shown). There may be a plurality of layers of wire.
