A venetian-blind shaft has a bevel gear drive combined with an automatic locking device, comprising a driven gear-wheel 14, an idle wheel 15 driving a first collar 22 through a tooth connection 23, and a braking member 30 and a second collar 32, both loosely spigoted on the first collar 22 to provide a lost motion coupling and having co-operating corrugated interfaces 40, the second collar 32 having a projection 33 slotted into a groove in the drive shaft 17. The shaft is driven by the gear wheel 15 engaging the first collar 22, which drives the second collar 35. When the drive is stopped, the shaft 17 continues to rotate a small amount, causing the second collar 35 to force the braking member 30 against the housing, thereby preventing further rotation of the shaft.
