Abstract
976,662. Preparing surgical gloves for use. H. DENNHOFER. March 17, 1961 [March 17, 1960], No. 9882/61. Heading F4G. [Also in Division A5] Apparatus for preparing surgical gloves for use comprises a rack having five hollow fingers 1, open at the tips, mounted on a hollow base member 3 which can be connected, through a connecting member 5 to a range of separate devices for preparing the gloves. The preparing operations include air-testing, washing, drying and powdering. The gloves are then sterilized. The base 3 has air openings 39 in its sides. The connector 5, which is shown in plan and in two sectional elevations in Figs. 3a, 3b and 3c, has a beaded edge 6 over which the cuff of the glove is pulled. The fingers 1 have rounded ends 2 and the three middle ones are supported by a spacing member 38 which may be coloured to differentiate the glove sizes. The apparatus is of a flexible plastic and the fingers can be squeezed together for insertion into the cuff of the glove. The glove on the rack is first rinsed inside and out with hot and cold water. The connector 5 is then connected to an air supply and the rack and glove, all enclosed in a nylon net bag to prevent bursting, is submerged in water and air tested (Fig. 2, not shown). The rack and glove are then placed in a drying device, warm air being passed up through the central channel of the connector 5 and out down the outside of the fingers 1 and through the holes 7 of the connector. The connector is then attached to a powdering device, as in Fig. 4, in which powder 34 is driven by a fan 15 through tubes 9, closable by spring-loaded valve-flaps 16, into the holes 7 of the connector 5 and the surplus returns down the centre of the connector. Alternatively a hand-operated powder-blower may be used in a similar way (Fig. 5, not shown). The gloves are then classified for size, placed, still on their racks, in protective bags and sterilized, preferably at 134 C. and 2.4 atmospheres pressure.
