Abstract
976,479. Induction coupled plasma flame generators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES. Oct. 16, 1963 [Oct. 24, 1962], No. 40202/62. Heading H5H. A silica-glass main tube 1 has fused into it across a diameter two small tubes 2 which serve both as outlets for argon gas (introduced through a slotted inlet tube 3) and for access to the plasma flame within the main tube. The arc is initiated by touching the R.F. pancake coil 7 with a probe 11 connected to a carbon or tungsten electrode 8 supported in the top bung 6, and thereafter settles down as a ball of plasma flame 12 in the middle of the pancake, Fig. 2. By increasing the gas flow the flame can be induced to move to a region 13 across the ends of the tubes 2 for, e.g. the continuous feeding of materials for heat treatment. The flame may be removed from the path of the material, without turning it off, by reducing the gas pressure so that it reverts to position 12. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3, two exciting coils 7a, 7b may be used to produce two plasma flames 12a, 12b, which unite to produce a column of flame 14 as the R.F. power is increased. Dimensions and operating powers are given.
