Abstract

1,140,862. Burners. F. J. WEINBERG. 11 Feb., 1966 [11 Feb., 1965], No. 5925/65. Heading F4T. [Also in Division H5] A fuel burner in which the temperature and degree of ionization of the flame is increased by an arc struck between a pair of electrodes and passing through the flame has an axial magnetic field created in the neighbourhood of the electrodes to cause the arc to rotate. A cylindrical conduit 10 terminates in an annular nozzle 11 forming an anode and provided with an internal passage 12 for coolant fluid and a tube 13 coaxial with the anode houses a printed thoriated tungsten cathode 14. Inert gas is passed along the tube to prevent damage to the cathode 14 by the arc and the annular passage between tube 13 and conduit 10 carries a fueloxidant mixture. The axial magnetic field is created by means of a flat coil 15 connected to a supply of current.
