[Also in Division G3] The height of electrically conducting loose material in front of a gate 8 above a conveyer belt is measured by a rod shaped electrode 1, a current being driven from the electrode 1 to the gate 8 or bed 6 to give a signal which varies according to the amount of material 9 in front of the gate. The electrode 1 is preferably in series with an impedance which gives a voltage indication of the current. To compensate for changes in specific resistance of the material the driving voltage may be automatically adjusted to produce a constant current between two reference electrodes in the material. The output voltage may be composed with a reference voltage or used directly to control the rate of the conveyer or the rate of feeding of material thereto. The output voltage or the difference between the output voltage and the reference voltage may be amplified before being used to control the apparatus.
